The genetic relationship
Ampelographic research connects both names to Croatia’s Crljenak Kaštelanski, also known as Tribidrag. The variety crossed the Adriatic and developed its own identity in Puglia.
Why the wines taste different
Soil, water, exposure, vine age, picking date and ageing vessel matter more than the name. Primitivo can be agile and dry, just as Zinfandel can be ripe and powerful.
Primitivo in Puglia
The variety ripens early and can accumulate sugar readily in Puglia. Preserving acidity requires close observation and picking for flavour rather than the calendar.
A Terra’s choice
Old plants, naturally small yields, hand picking, gentle extraction and steel: our aim is to show the grape’s Puglian voice without covering it with weight or oak.
